Lossless Sound Streamed

Wednesday, November 19th, 2014

Birmingham based Home Automation specialist Install Automation Ltd is delighted to announce their support for the new Tidal streaming service.

Scandinavian music streaming service Tidal has announced that it will launch in the UK and US today, offering 25m tracks in lossless quality for £19.99 a month.

It is being targeted towards serious music fans who want high-quality sound, and includes curated playlists, 75,000 HD music videos and articles by music journalists as extra content to lure them in.

The service has been available in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Poland for some time, but is now making an aggressive push for new markets.

Tidal has distribution agreements signed with all of the major labels, including Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. But it has also been working with many independent labels to cater to niche tastes too.

Currently it offers more than 25m music tracks in lossless quality; a FLAC format streamed at 1,411kbps. The company claims that this rivals CD quality.

For comparison, Spotify uses just 96kbps streaming on mobile, 160kbps on desktop and 320kbps for “Premium subscribers”, although these are in the Ogg Vorbis format so not directly comparable.

However, Spotify is also free for those who choose to live with adverts, or £9.99 a month without them – half the price of Tidal. Time will tell whether there is demand for higher quality at a higher price.

The service is available across iOS and Android devices and desktop PCs and Macs, but also network players such as Sonos. Users are also able to download high-quality files to their device to listen to later, allowing you to use the service away from fast internet connections.

“We are delighted that TIDAL has launched and that music lovers can now appreciate music the way it is meant to sound,” said TIDAL CEO Andy Chen.

“But the music is just one part of the service. The expert editorial educates, entertains and enriches the music experience whilst the music videos complement the music perfectly. We are sure that TIDAL will quickly become the music streaming service of choice for all who appreciate high quality at every level.”

Microsoft Xbox One – Whats the truth?

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

The Microsoft Xbox OneThe Microsoft Xbox may not be the integrated home automation dream that the incumbent 360 has been.

With the requirement for an always on Kinect 2.0 it may be more efficient and bright than the original bar but how will the consumer feel about a device that could be recording onto Microsoft’s servers personal data such as facial recognition, health information like heart rate and any other manner of intrusive data.

Microsoft’s vice president Phil Harrision has gone on record with the following statement; “Microsoft has very, very good policies around privacy,” he said. “We’re a leader in the world of privacy, I think you’ll find. We take it very seriously. We aren’t using Kinect to snoop on anybody at all. We listen for the word ‘Xbox on’ and then switch on the machine, but we don’t transmit personal data in any way, shape or form that could be personally identifiable to you, unless you explicitly opt into that.”

The last section “unless you explicitly opt into that” smacks of previous facebook and google mistakes, the general public have a tendency to reject anything that could capture personal data especially if you don’t tick the right box.

The used game scenario seems to be a total mess, it’s not just used games what about sharing? My son and I share games at home between two separate Xbox’s he most certainly doesn’t want me logging on to his account and trashing his credibility by playing under his gamer tag.

As to used games, it’s what has made the Xbox 360 gain the market share it has and the only thing that has helped keep games stores on the high street.

Microsoft has maybe missed a trick here, they should have either got rid of the physical media all together and reduced gaming prices dramatically or they create a system similar to the software on your PC and laptop, you can have a license to install on both but only run online on one concurrently.

Also without support for Xbox 360 games its going to be a huge purchasing decision and you can clearly see that many gamer’s will wait to see how many titles are available before committing the cash.

The jury is out we can only wait and see.

Xbox Music, Microsofts New All-in-One Music Service with Home Automation

Tuesday, October 16th, 2012
Xbox Music is Microsoft’s brand new all-in-one music service that enables users to listen to music how, when, where and on what device they want. It is included in a rolling update to Xbox LIVE that starts Tuesday and will be expanded when Windows 8 launches.
Integrating Xbox Music with a distributed home automation system from install Automation will allow you to use this service in every connected room.
The text below from Microsoft explains in detail the concept and thoughts behind this new service.

Xbox Music, Microsoft’s new all-in-one music service, specially designed to let users listen to music in exactly the way they want, begins rolling out to millions of people around the world Oct. 16 on the Xbox 360, then to the masses with Windows 8 on Oct. 26.

The all-in-one music service combines the best aspects of free-streaming radio, music subscription services and music purchasing options, all in one elegant package, says Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business Marketing and Strategy. No longer do people have to rely on “service hopping” to get the music they love.

</object></div> <p><mce:script type=”text/javascript”><!– document.write(“<script type=’text/javascript’ src=’” + (window.location.protocol) + “//’><\/script>”); // –></mce:script></p>
For example, Mehdi explains, here’s a not-that-outlandish scenario for a music lover today: you’re listening to an Internet radio station at work, say Pandora, and you hear a new song you love. You quickly stop what you’re doing and bookmark the song before it stops playing. Later, in the car, you open Pandora to look up the name of the bookmarked song, then you open Spotify so you can use your subscription to listen to it again. Two weeks later, you’re thoroughly in love with the song, and decide you want to buy it so you can burn it to a mix CD you’re making a friend, so you purchase the MP3 on Amazon or iTunes.

“There are a lot of individual services that do a good job, but today there isn’t a service which can pull together the benefits of download-to-own, music subscription, or free streaming services,” Mehdi says. “With Xbox Music, what we wanted to do is bring all of that value in one simple, easy-to-use service, then build some additional value on top — make it really beautiful, and have it work across all of your devices. We’ve been able to simplify the music experience in a really powerful way.”

Mehdi says Xbox Music will have arguably the largest music catalog of all music services, with 30 million songs, and that the experience offers a fantastic way of discovering new music. He says Xbox Music also will be the only all-in-one music service that enables users to listen to music in whatever way — and on whatever device — they choose.

“I’m excited as a consumer because I myself am a big music fan and this really will replace all of those other services I’ve been using,” Mehdi says. “From a business perspective, Xbox Music is a great way to show the world what Xbox means for broader entertainment on their phone, tablet, PC or console.”

Owners of iPhones and iPads will be able to use the service within the next month, with Xbox users getting it later this summer and YouView when it launches.

Now TV customers can ‘pay & play’ for instant access to a selection of more than 1000 films through the Sky Store, including the latest ‘now on DVD ‘ releases.

Alternatively, for an all-you-can-watch experience, the monthly Sky Movies Pass gives instant and unlimited access to around 600 films, including recent blockbusters.

“We are targeting the 13 million non-pay TV households out there with a no commitment, no contract way of delivering Sky content they want in a dip in and dip out way,” said BSkyB managing director of sales and marketing Stephen van Rooyen. “The whole idea is to have something ‘not Sky’, it is purposely designed to attract new customers.”

The ES9000′s picture quality provides an enhanced Smart TV experience, utilizing Samsung’s Micro Dimming Ultimate and Precision Black Local Dimming technology to deliver richer, more optimized color and detail; the highest contrast ratio on a Samsung Smart TV to date; and the best picture quality available on a Samsung LED TV.
