Lossless Sound Streamed

Wednesday, November 19th, 2014

Birmingham based Home Automation specialist Install Automation Ltd is delighted to announce their support for the new Tidal streaming service.

Scandinavian music streaming service Tidal has announced that it will launch in the UK and US today, offering 25m tracks in lossless quality for £19.99 a month.

It is being targeted towards serious music fans who want high-quality sound, and includes curated playlists, 75,000 HD music videos and articles by music journalists as extra content to lure them in.

The service has been available in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Poland for some time, but is now making an aggressive push for new markets.

Tidal has distribution agreements signed with all of the major labels, including Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. But it has also been working with many independent labels to cater to niche tastes too.

Currently it offers more than 25m music tracks in lossless quality; a FLAC format streamed at 1,411kbps. The company claims that this rivals CD quality.

For comparison, Spotify uses just 96kbps streaming on mobile, 160kbps on desktop and 320kbps for “Premium subscribers”, although these are in the Ogg Vorbis format so not directly comparable.

However, Spotify is also free for those who choose to live with adverts, or £9.99 a month without them – half the price of Tidal. Time will tell whether there is demand for higher quality at a higher price.

The service is available across iOS and Android devices and desktop PCs and Macs, but also network players such as Sonos. Users are also able to download high-quality files to their device to listen to later, allowing you to use the service away from fast internet connections.

“We are delighted that TIDAL has launched and that music lovers can now appreciate music the way it is meant to sound,” said TIDAL CEO Andy Chen.

“But the music is just one part of the service. The expert editorial educates, entertains and enriches the music experience whilst the music videos complement the music perfectly. We are sure that TIDAL will quickly become the music streaming service of choice for all who appreciate high quality at every level.”

Microsoft Xbox One – Whats the truth?

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

The Microsoft Xbox OneThe Microsoft Xbox may not be the integrated home automation dream that the incumbent 360 has been.

With the requirement for an always on Kinect 2.0 it may be more efficient and bright than the original bar but how will the consumer feel about a device that could be recording onto Microsoft’s servers personal data such as facial recognition, health information like heart rate and any other manner of intrusive data.

Microsoft’s vice president Phil Harrision has gone on record with the following statement; “Microsoft has very, very good policies around privacy,” he said. “We’re a leader in the world of privacy, I think you’ll find. We take it very seriously. We aren’t using Kinect to snoop on anybody at all. We listen for the word ‘Xbox on’ and then switch on the machine, but we don’t transmit personal data in any way, shape or form that could be personally identifiable to you, unless you explicitly opt into that.”

The last section “unless you explicitly opt into that” smacks of previous facebook and google mistakes, the general public have a tendency to reject anything that could capture personal data especially if you don’t tick the right box.

The used game scenario seems to be a total mess, it’s not just used games what about sharing? My son and I share games at home between two separate Xbox’s he most certainly doesn’t want me logging on to his account and trashing his credibility by playing under his gamer tag.

As to used games, it’s what has made the Xbox 360 gain the market share it has and the only thing that has helped keep games stores on the high street.

Microsoft has maybe missed a trick here, they should have either got rid of the physical media all together and reduced gaming prices dramatically or they create a system similar to the software on your PC and laptop, you can have a license to install on both but only run online on one concurrently.

Also without support for Xbox 360 games its going to be a huge purchasing decision and you can clearly see that many gamer’s will wait to see how many titles are available before committing the cash.

The jury is out we can only wait and see.

BT Buys ESPN UK (another box required?)

Monday, February 25th, 2013

Here at Install Automation Ltd we constantly keep up to date with the industry news to ensure that our clients receive the best not just in installed home automation systems but also from the benefit of our shared knowledge. As content providers ebb and flow with rights passing from one company to another it is vital that the infrastructure in the modern home is able to cater for distribution of a wide variety of systems and boxes without clutter, mess and constant change.

BT is making a play for the premier league rights and to make sure you don’t end up with a multi cable and box nightmare in your lounge and limited access throughout the property to new and changing services please consult us about an integrated and distributed home entertainment solution. Please bear in mind that its far easier to cable for now than it has ever been, after all who wants to miss the big match.

Now back to the BT news…

BT’s got far more important things to do than fill in the gaps in its fiber broadband coverage, like blowing around £10 million ($15 million) on buying ESPN’s UK and Ireland channels from Disney. BT is trying to compete with Sky on sporting rights, and needs a channel to broadcast 38 Premier League games a year for the next three years — which cost the phone company £738 million ($1.1 billion). At the same time, ESPN is shuttering ESPN Classic, the satellite channel dedicated to showing classic sporting events free of charge. Broadly speaking, BT just knows how to brighten our Mondays.
